How to Choose the Right Microblading Artist
Choosing the right microblading artist is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. Beautiful eyebrows don’t just depend on the technique—they depend on the person performing it.
With social media filled with flawless before-and-after photos, it can be difficult to know which artist truly delivers great results. Here’s what you should be looking for before booking your appointment.
1. Prioritize Healed Results Over Fresh Results
If I could give only one piece of advice, it would be this:
Choose the artist with the strongest healed work portfolio—not the artist with the prettiest fresh photos.
Fresh brows are temporary. Healed brows are what you’ll actually be living with every day.
Many artists can create beautiful brows immediately after the procedure. Far fewer can consistently produce beautiful healed results months or even years later.
Healed results tell you things that fresh results simply can’t:
How well the artist implants pigment.
Whether the color heals naturally instead of gray, blue, or red.
Whether the shape stays soft and flattering.
How evenly the pigment retains.
Whether the work ages gracefully over time.
If an artist consistently posts excellent healed work, that’s one of the strongest indicators that they understand proper technique, pigment selection, depth control, and long-term healing.
In my opinion, healed results are one of the biggest secrets to finding your dream artist.
2. Don’t Be Distracted by Impressive Credentials Alone
An artist may advertise things like:
Years of experience
Celebrity clients
Industry awards
Multiple certifications
Premium pricing
A months-long waiting list
Teaching other artists
None of those things automatically guarantee you’ll receive beautiful healed brows.
They can certainly increase your confidence that an artist is experienced, but they should never replace what matters most: proof of consistently healed work.
Experience is valuable.
Awards are valuable.
Teaching is valuable.
But if an artist rarely shows healed results, it’s worth asking yourself why.
Confident artists are usually proud to share how their work looks once it’s fully healed. Many even organize healed results into dedicated Instagram highlights or website galleries because they understand that’s what future clients should be evaluating.
After all, every experienced permanent makeup artist knows one important fact:
Brows never heal exactly the way they looked on Day One.
That’s why healed work deserves just as much attention as fresh work—if not more.
3. Make Sure the Portfolio Is Genuine
Unfortunately, stolen work is more common in the permanent makeup industry than many people realize.
Some artists use photos that don’t belong to them to make their portfolio appear stronger.
One of the easiest ways to spot this is by paying attention to consistency.
Ask yourself:
Do most photos appear to be taken in the same room?
Do you recognize the same treatment bed, flooring, walls, lighting, or setup?
Does the photography style stay consistent?
A common red flag is when the most beautiful work is always tightly cropped with no visible surroundings, while the more average-looking work clearly shows the artist’s studio.
That doesn’t automatically mean the photos are stolen—but it should encourage you to investigate further.
If something feels inconsistent, trust your instincts and continue researching before committing.

4. Don’t Rely on Photos Alone
Photos can be incredibly misleading.
Modern editing apps make it surprisingly easy to make small adjustments that most people would never notice.
A hairstroke that’s slightly crooked can be straightened.
A shaky line can be smoothed.
A gap can be filled.
A tail can be reshaped.
A misplaced stroke can simply disappear.
These tiny edits can dramatically improve the appearance of a brow without looking obviously edited.
Video is much harder to manipulate that way.
While artists may still use skin-softening filters or beauty filters during video recordings, it’s much more difficult to digitally redraw individual hairstrokes, reshape sections of the brow, or hide uneven tattoo work while the camera is moving.
That’s one of the reasons I encourage people to prioritize looking through an artist’s video portfolio—not just their photos.
When you’re choosing a facial tattoo that may last for years, seeing the brows from multiple angles in motion gives you much greater confidence that what you’re seeing is genuine.
This includes making sure the healed work is displayed in video as well, not just the fresh work. If you see most healed work is displayed on photos, that increases your risk of uncertainty.

Final Thoughts
Choosing a microblading artist isn’t about finding the most followers, the viral artist, highest price, or the most impressive list of credentials.
It’s about finding someone who has consistently demonstrated that their work heals beautifully.
Take your time.
Study healed results.
Look for authenticity.
Watch videos.
Verify that the portfolio is genuine.
The extra research you do before your appointment can make all the difference between loving your brows for years—or wishing you had chosen differently.
