Why Video Is More Trustworthy Than Photos When Choosing a PMU Brow Artist

Updated: Aug 12

When you’re choosing a permanent makeup artist, most people naturally focus on before-and-after photos. Beautiful pictures can certainly be impressive—but they’re not always the most reliable way to judge an artist’s work.

If you really want to make an informed decision, pay close attention to video footage, not just photos.

Why Photos Can Be Misleading

Modern editing tools have made it incredibly easy to enhance or retouch photographs. You don’t need to be an expert in Photoshop anymore. Many apps allow users to make subtle changes with just a few taps.

With eyebrow photos, it’s possible to make small adjustments that most people would never notice, such as:

  • Straightening a slightly uneven outline.

  • Smoothing out a wobbly border.

  • Making one brow appear more symmetrical than the other.

  • Extending or shortening individual hair strokes.

  • Removing a misplaced stroke.

  • Cleaning up tiny imperfections around the edges.

These edits can be extremely subtle, making a brow appear just a little more polished than it looked in real life.

This doesn’t mean every artist edits their work. But as a client investing in your face, it’s worth recognizing that still photographs are much easier to manipulate than video.

Why Video Is Much Harder to Fake

Video tells a much more complete story.

As the camera moves around the face, you’re able to see the brows from different angles and in motion. Small imperfections that could easily be altered in a photograph become much harder to disguise.

While some creators use skin-smoothing filters on videos, those filters generally soften the appearance of the skin—not reshape eyebrow outlines, fix asymmetry, move one brow higher, erase individual strokes, or correct small design flaws without becoming noticeable.

That’s one reason why many experienced clients place greater trust in video portfolios than photo galleries.

One Perfect Photo Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story

Even without editing, a photograph can still be misleading.

A flattering camera angle, carefully positioned lighting, or a specific pose can make a brow appear more beautiful and flattering than how it actually is.

Video naturally reduces this issue because it usually captures multiple angles instead of one carefully selected frame.

That’s why, when evaluating an artist’s portfolio, I always encourage people to look for videos that clearly show:

  • Both eyebrows together.

  • Close-up footage as well as father away

  • The brows while the client naturally moves their face.

The more complete the view, the easier it becomes to judge the actual quality of the work.

Be Careful With Portfolios That Only Show One Brow

Another thing worth paying attention to is what isn’t being shown.

If an artist consistently posts close-ups of only one eyebrow—or crops the other one out or you can only see part of the other brow but not all of it—ask yourself why.

Sometimes it’s simply an artistic choice. But if that’s the case, you’re missing one of the most important parts of permanent makeup: symmetry.

A beautiful eyebrow by itself doesn’t tell you whether both brows work together as a pair.

When browsing portfolios, look for artists who regularly show:

  • Both brows in the same frame.

  • Full-face views.

  • Different camera angles.

  • Videos instead of only still photos.

The more transparent the portfolio, the more confidence you can have in what you’re seeing.

If I Had to Choose Between Two Artists…

Imagine Artist A has stunning photos but very few videos.

Artist B’s work may not look quite as glamorous at first glance, but almost everything is shown through raw video footage from multiple angles.

Personally, I’d feel more confident choosing Artist B.

Why?

Because video gives me more evidence that what I’m seeing is an accurate representation of their work. It removes much of the uncertainty that can come with heavily curated photography.

When it comes to your face, choosing based on the most transparent portfolio possible simply makes sense.

Transparency Matters at Yely Beauty

At Yely Beauty, transparency is one of my core values.

That’s why you’ll notice that the majority of my portfolio consists of raw video footage rather than still photos.

I intentionally show both eyebrows while the client is moving her face, and you’ll often see me brushing through my clients’ natural eyebrow hairs on camera with a little brow brush. This allows you to see the results more clearly and helps demonstrate that what you’re looking at is the actual work—not just a perfectly captured shot.

My goal isn’t simply to show beautiful brows.

My goal is to give you enough transparency to feel confident that the results you see on my page are the results you can realistically expect.
