Looking for a Career Without Years of School? Permanent Makeup May Be Worth Considering

Are you looking for a career that you can start with no experience or degree?
Maybe you’re looking to learn a skill, but the idea of going to school for two, four, or even more years doesn’t fit your life.
If that’s what you’re looking for, permanent makeup (PMU) is one career path you may want to consider.
What Is Permanent Makeup?
Permanent makeup is a tattoo that implants pigment into the skin to enhance features such as the eyebrows, lips, and eyes.
One of the largest areas within the industry is the brows. PMU techniques for brows include microblading, powder brows, nano brows, and combination brows.
Unlike many traditional careers, becoming a permanent makeup brow artist generally does not require earning a two-year or four-year college degree.
Understand the Requirements Where You Live
Permanent makeup regulations are not identical everywhere.
Regulations vary depending on location.
But in most states you do not need any cosmetology or estheticians license or a collage degree to perform permanent makeup.
Depending on where you live, legal requirements may simply just include being registered with your local health department as a body art practitioner.
How to get registered?
In most counties, to get registered you will need to be 18 years or older, complete a bloodborne pathogens training (BBP), and be working from an approved body art facility.
The BBP is a 2 hour online course that teaches you how to prevent cross contamination when dealing with blood.
Working from an approved body art facility means you can’t be tattooing brows from your house.
But that doesn’t mean you’ll have to open your own brow studio right away. You can start by renting space or a chair from an already approved beauty salon.
A Career You Can Begin Learning Without Spending Years in College
One of the biggest reasons people become interested in permanent makeup is the relatively short educational path compared with many traditional careers.
PMU brow classes are usually 3 days long. With prices ranging from $1,000 - $5,000.
That’s it. No years of schooling required.
However, that does not mean you can just take any PMU brow class and immediately start tattooing people’s brows.
Choosing the right trainer is extremely important.
Take the wrong class and you may be feeling like you need to spend more money taking another class again.
Can Permanent Makeup Be a Lucrative Career?
It can be.
Brows permanent makeup is a specialized service, and established artists may charge hundreds of dollars for a single brow appointment.
I charge $875. It takes me 1.5 hrs to complete a whole appointment from start to finish. And I only use about $10 worth of supplies.
But it’s important to understand the difference between revenue potential and guaranteed income.
You still have to convince people to book with you. How? Knowing how to market yourself and your work, posting on social media, paying for ads and doing great work that your own clients can bring in referrals.
Why PMU Can Be Attractive to Women Looking for More Flexibility
For some women, one of the most appealing parts of becoming a permanent makeup artist isn’t simply how much an appointment can cost.
It’s the possibility of eventually having more control over when and how much you work.
Many PMU artists work independently renting a chair inside an existing studio, or open their own studios, and structure their schedules around their own flexibility.
That can be particularly appealing to women who are raising children, going through a career change, or simply don’t want a traditional Monday-through-Friday 9-5 schedule.
Of course, self-employment comes with its own responsibilities. You have to find clients, manage expenses, market yourself, and run the business.
Flexibility doesn’t mean effortless.
But for the right person, having greater control over your schedule can be incredibly valuable.
You Don’t Have to Come From the Beauty Industry
Another misconception is that you need years of beauty-industry experience before learning permanent makeup.
People enter PMU from many different backgrounds.
I was a restaurant waitress and Uber driver before becoming a pmu brow artist myself. It only took me 3 months to get fully stablished and then just one year to also start teaching this trade to others.
What matters is your willingness to learn, how great your understanding is, and how well you market yourself.
Choosing the Right PMU Training Matters
Because the barrier to entering the industry can be relatively low, the quality of PMU education varies enormously.
Don’t choose a course simply because it promises that you’ll become a successful artist in a few days.
Instead, look closely at what you’re actually being taught and who’s teaching you.
Before paying thousands of dollars for training, research the instructor just as carefully as you would research the career itself.
Your first set of brows probably won’t look like the work of an artist who has performed hundreds of procedures—and that’s completely normal.
The goal of good beginner education should be to give you a strong foundation that you can continue building upon.
Is Permanent Makeup Right for You?
PMU may be worth exploring if you’re looking for:
A skill-based career that doesn’t necessarily require years of college
The possibility of self-employment
Greater control over your future work schedule
A career within the beauty industry
A service with relatively high revenue potential per appointment
But don’t choose permanent makeup because someone on social media made it look like easy money.
Choose it because you’re genuinely interested in learning the craft and you’re willing to put in the practice required to become good at it.
