Why Healed Results Matter More Than Fresh Results in Permanent Makeup

If you've been researching permanent makeup, you've probably noticed that almost every artist posts beautiful photos immediately after the procedure. Fresh brows often look crisp, bold, and perfectly shaped.

But here's something many clients don't realize:

Fresh results are only temporary.

The true test of a permanent makeup artist's skill isn't how the brows look the day they're done—it's how they look once they're fully healed.

Fresh Brows Don't Tell the Whole Story

Immediately after a PMU procedure, the pigment is sitting at the surface of the skin. The brows appear fuller, the color is much more visible than it will eventually heal, and every set of fresh brows tends to photograph beautifully.

Over the next several weeks, however, your skin begins its natural healing process. During this time:

• Your brows will form scabs.

• The scabs will peel off.

• The final healed result is revealed.

This healed result is what you'll actually be living with—not the fresh photo taken immediately after your appointment.

Healed Results Reveal the Artist's True Skill

A skilled permanent makeup artist understands much more than simply creating beautiful brows on the day of the procedure.

They understand:

• Proper pigment depth.

• Skin anatomy.

• Color theory.

• Different skin types.

• Pigment selection.

• Healing behavior.

• Long-term retention.

These factors all work together to determine how your brows will look months and even years after your appointment.

An artist who consistently produces beautiful healed results has demonstrated that they understand how to create work that lasts—not just work that photographs well immediately afterward.

Why Some Artists Rarely Show Healed Results

Many artists regularly post fresh work because that's when brows look their best. And beautiful fresh brows attract clients.

This is a big problem in the industry because this misleads people into believing their brows will look like the fresh pictures posted online.

When it comes to tattooed hairstrokes in particular (nano brows or microblading), its healed results are often the ones with the least retention (even up to 90% pigment loss) and many artists fail to warn clients about this. And while touch ups help, many artists go heavy on the touch up to compensate for the lack of healed results which then causes the strokes to not look so natural anymore as they become blurred and solid. This can make the brow heal like a powder brow, but not a soft natural powder brow as you would at least expect. More like a solid gray brow.

But don't take my word for it. Healed results are one of the most valuable ways for clients to evaluate an artist's consistency and long-term quality. A lack of a strong healed work portfolio is the biggest red flag that something is not healing right.

This industry is heavily marketed as a two step process; It is well known that people usually come for the initial session plus the touch up. When they come for the touch up, this is the opportunity where us artists get to take pictures/videos of the healed results.

If an artist has a large collection of healed work, it shows confidence in how their results perform after the healing process—not just on day one.

Before booking your brows permanent makeup appointment, consider asking:

• Can I see your healed work portfolio?
