Why Do Some Powder Brows Look Like They Were Drawn On With a Sharpie?

One of the biggest misconceptions about powder brows is that they all look like they were drawn on with a Sharpie.

The truth is…

Not all powder brows look like that.

When performed correctly, powder brows should look soft, airy, and natural—not harsh or overly tattooed outlines and borders. 

Professionally performed powder brows are designed to have:

• A soft, pixelated appearance.

• A smooth ombré gradient that fades lighter toward the front.

• Blended borders instead of harsh outlines.

• Natural-looking definition without appearing solid or “filled in” with a marker.

Why Do Some Powder Brows Look So Harsh?

Unfortunately, not every artist performs powder brows using the same techniques or standards.

Some artists implant pigment too densely.

Others create harsh outlines that remain visible after healing.

Some choose pigment colors that are too dark for the client’s features.

And in some cases, artists are simply using outdated techniques that produce results resembling traditional tattooed eyebrows rather than modern soft shading techniques.

These types of results have unfortunately given powder brows a reputation they don’t deserve.

The procedure itself isn’t the problem.

The execution is.

When performed by an experienced artist, powder brows can be one of the softest, most natural-looking permanent makeup techniques available while still providing beautiful fullness and definition.

How Do You Avoid “Sharpie Brows”?

The answer isn’t avoiding powder brows.

It’s choosing the right artist.

Just because someone offers powder brows doesn’t necessarily mean they specialize in creating soft, natural healed results.

Before booking your appointment, take the time to study the artist’s healed portfolio—not just their fresh work.

Look for healed brows that consistently show:

• Soft shading with a gradient ombré effect.

• Natural borders rather than obvious outlines.

• Healed color that still looks natural based on the client’s features instead of overly cool, ashy, or gray.

One beautiful healed result can happen by chance.

A large collection of beautiful healed results demonstrates consistency.

Make Sure the Portfolio Is Actually Theirs

Unfortunately, there’s another issue many clients don’t realize exists.

Some artists use photos that aren’t actually their work.

In some cases, images are copied from other artists, edited, or even reposted with a different logo added to them.

Because of this, don’t just glance through a portfolio.

Take a closer look.

Pay attention to whether the photos have a consistent photography style, lighting, background, and overall presentation. Consistency often makes it easier to recognize authentic work, while large differences from one photo to the next can be worth looking into further.

If something feels off, trust your instincts and do a little more research before booking.

Choosing the right artist is one of the most important decisions you’ll make, and verifying that their portfolio is genuine is just as important as evaluating the quality of the work itself.
